The safe. She found the combination, a number that unlocked a secret she hadn't known existed. The metal door swung open, revealing neat stacks of cash and investment documents. Her husband, Thomas, had always been so careful, so frugal. It was all a complete fabrication.

Her face burned. The air in the room felt thick and suffocating. She felt a surge of adrenaline, her hands clenched into fists. She didn't trust her own voice; the words wouldn't come. She needed to leave, to get away from him, from this house, from the weight of his lie.

She closed the safe, and as she did, she knew she could no longer live this way. She was done. Her only thought was that she needed to escape. She walked out of the house, not even pausing to grab a coat.
