Liam stared at the list, his jaw clenched. "Learn to play the saxophone." His father, a man who considered a walk to the mailbox a Herculean effort. He’d barely shown an interest in music beyond the radio.

He tossed the list onto the mahogany desk, the polished surface reflecting his angry face. The betrayal was staggering. All those lectures about saving, about responsibility, about settling down. And then, this. Dreams, desires, hidden away like dirty secrets.

His hands shook as he reached for the scotch. His father never even touched liquor. The hypocrisy made him sick. It felt like a deliberate slight, a deliberate mockery of his own, very ordinary life.
