"No." That was all Sarah managed to say. The word was a breathy whisper, barely audible above the roar in her ears. She was staring at the sleek black sports car that now occupied the driveway next door. It was the same driveway where she'd often seen Mr. Davis, her neighbor, struggling to fix his beat-up old sedan.

She felt a wave of nausea wash over her. It had been hard to pay for the latest school trip for her children. Mr. Davis had always seemed so…ordinary, a regular working guy, just like her. But the car, the car screamed of hidden wealth, of a life she could only dream of.

Her hands shook as she fumbled for the keys to her own, ancient minivan. She couldn't bring herself to go to the store, not now. The thought of facing the world, of pretending everything was fine, felt impossible. She wanted to yell, to break something.
