The elevator ride felt impossibly long. The silence, broken only by the hum of the machinery, amplified the tension. By the time the doors opened on his floor, he was already coiled, ready to explode.

He ripped the notice from his door, his fingers trembling. The words "Condominium Conversion" burned into his mind. He wanted to rip it to shreds, to deface it, to make it disappear.

He flung the paper across the room, watching it flutter to the floor. The sound of his own breathing filled the apartment, a ragged, uneven rhythm.

He felt a sudden and overwhelming urge to escape, to run, to leave everything behind. The walls seemed to be closing in, suffocating him with their silent threat.
