The news broke at the worst possible time: right before the opening of his new exhibit. Liam had worked tirelessly, pouring everything he had into his art. The thought of it all being on display now was... difficult.

Then he saw the woman. Standing near his centerpiece, her hand resting on her arm. His ‘Echoes of the Past’ piece. Perfectly replicated, tattooed in deep blacks and grays, and on display for the world to see.

He stepped back, a cold wave washing over him. The party felt like an ambush, his mind reeling. He felt exposed, stripped bare. His carefully constructed defenses had crumbled. He needed to be alone. He walked to the back patio and lit a cigarette, the nicotine doing little to calm the tremor in his hands.
