The divorce papers lay on the kitchen counter, a stark white testament to the unraveling of everything. Sarah ran a hand through her hair, the strands catching on her fingers. Her niece, Lily, was visiting for the weekend, and the constant questions about “Mommy and Daddy” were starting to fray her nerves. Earlier, she’d found a drawing on the fridge – a stick figure with a huge grin standing next to a fuzzy blue blob. “That’s Bartholomew,” Lily had announced. “He lives in the cupboard and keeps me company.” Sarah stared at the drawing, a cold dread creeping up her spine, like a phantom limb.
