The phone rang, a shrill, unwelcome intrusion. Michael ignored it, staring at the book lying open on his desk. The words, his life, laid bare. It was like he was watching a stranger’s life story.

His stomach lurched. The coffee mug on his desk rattled slightly. He felt a cold dread settling in the pit of his stomach. His hands trembled so violently, he couldn't form a fist. He felt a wave of nausea, the room spinning. He needed to get away, to be alone, but the thought of facing the world felt impossibly difficult.

He felt like a caged animal. Every breath felt forced and shallow.
