He felt a cold sweat prickling his skin as he scanned the room. David's chest felt constricted, as if a vise were slowly tightening around him. The silence, punctuated only by the ticking of a grandfather clock in the corner, was deafening. He felt a desperate urge to flee, to escape the suffocating weight of this place.

The chipped paint and the dimly lit shelves only made the space feel more constricting. He ran a hand through his hair, leaving it a mess.

Then, through the haze, he saw it. The elegant curve of the ring, the way it caught the light, instantly recognizable. His grandmother’s engagement band. He had to have it.

"That one," he choked out, pointing. His voice sounded hoarse, strained. He felt his face flush with a mixture of hope and fear.
