The hammering started before he even finished reading the second paragraph. Robert winced, his hand instinctively flying to his temples. It was like his thoughts were being hammered. The world, like the neighbor’s fence, was becoming louder.

He paced the living room, the notice crumpled in his fist. He felt a sudden, irrational urge to smash something. The noise, the sudden intrusion, was a brutal assault on his senses.

He needed quiet. He needed space. He needed to be alone. He took a deep, shuddering breath and ran a hand through his hair. He went to the window and stared out at the fence. It was already starting.
