He paced the confines of his old bedroom, the floorboards groaning under his weight. Every footstep echoed the turmoil churning inside him. The walls, once a canvas for his teenage dreams, now seemed to shrink, closing in with each circuit.

His father, a shadow of his former self, had mentioned, yet again, his "lack of focus." The words, though delivered with kindness, struck a nerve. He clenched his fists, struggling to keep his reaction at bay, and abruptly ended their conversation.

He stopped in front of the mirror, the stranger staring back at him - a face etched with lines he didn't remember acquiring, and eyes that reflected a weariness he couldn't shake. He turned away, suddenly unable to stand the sight of himself.
