"Damn it," Maya whispered, her voice tight and strained. The gate agent, a bored-looking woman with perfectly applied lipstick, offered no solace, only a shrug and the promise of further updates. Maya slumped against the cold glass, peering out at the grounded aircraft. The reality of the situation was a crushing weight on her shoulders. Her best friend's wedding was in a few short hours, and she was supposed to be the maid of honor.

Her stomach churned, a knot tightening with each passing minute. Sweat beaded on her forehead despite the cool air conditioning.
