He paced his small apartment, the worn floorboards groaning under his restless movements. The manuscript lay open on the desk, mocking him with its unfinished sentences. Professor Albright, his academic guiding light, was gone, his office emptied, his phone disconnected. A sense of doom hung heavy in the air.

He ran a hand through his hair, finding clumps falling out. The walls seemed to be closing in, the silence of the room amplifying the pounding of his heart. His stomach churned. He felt as though he was drowning in an ocean of doubt, and there was no one to reach for.
