Michael slammed his laptop shut, the metallic clang echoing in the sparsely furnished room. He ran a hand through his already disheveled hair, leaving it standing on end. He felt a throbbing sensation behind his eyes, a dull ache that seemed to worsen with every passing thought. "It's fine," he muttered, the words sounding hollow even to his own ears. He reached for a glass of water, his hand trembling slightly as he brought it to his lips. The silence was suffocating, punctuated only by the frantic beat of his own heart. He needed to prepare for the interview, but the prospect of it left him paralyzed, unable to formulate a single coherent sentence in his head.
