The phone vibrated again, the insistent buzzing a digital mosquito in the otherwise silent house. Daniel stared at the screen, seeing the tenth call from his friend, Mark. Mark, the "financial analyst" who always had the latest luxury car and a flawless suit. He'd seen Mark at the local diner that morning, slinging hash browns.

He tossed the phone onto the couch. His shoulders slumped. The mortgage payment was overdue, the car needed repairs, and his own work at the bakery was wearing him down. He closed his eyes, imagining the weight of the dough, the heat of the oven, the endless cycle.

He picked up a nearby notepad, crumpling the edges, tracing aimlessly with a pen. The lies, the facade, it had all become too much. He felt like the air had been sucked out of the room, leaving him suffocating in the silence and the truth.
