“No, no, no,” David mumbled, his voice cracking. He’d been trying to keep things together, to stay afloat. His car, the only thing that felt stable, was missing from his driveway.

He checked his pockets, his gaze darting around the street, as if it might magically reappear. The world started to blur, colors bleeding together. He felt a pressure behind his eyes, a tightness in his chest.

He felt like screaming, but the sound was trapped, a silent scream in his throat. He just stood there, paralyzed, watching his world unravel.
