The world was spinning. Sarah could taste the metallic tang of fear in her mouth. The doctor’s calm, rehearsed speech about an entirely different life, an entirely different body, an entirely different destiny, grated on her nerves. She picked at the chipped paint on the armrest, her fingers tracing the imperfections. She needed to be alone.

"I need to leave," she said, her voice barely a whisper. She rose, her legs shaky beneath her, and made her way through the crowded waiting room, the sounds of conversation blurring into a meaningless hum. The door, the escape, felt miles away.
