“Are you kidding me?” David spat the words into the echoing phone. The cancellation, the terse message, had stolen the wind from his sails. He threw his phone onto the couch, the impact jarring through his whole body. He felt the rapid beat of his heart against his ribs. The venue, the gifts, the carefully curated guest list – all rendered meaningless by a few simple words. He walked back and forth, muttering to himself, his frustration building to a fever pitch. He kicked at a stray cushion, sending feathers swirling into the air.
