The musty scent of the bookstore was supposed to be comforting, a balm to soothe the frayed edges of her nerves. Instead, it just felt suffocating. Each towering shelf of books seemed to press in on her, a physical manifestation of the deadlines and demands swirling in her mind. Grabbing a random paperback, she retreated to a creaking armchair near a window, desperate for a moment of peace.

Her hands, usually steady, fumbled as she opened the book. The words blurred before her eyes. Suddenly, a small, folded piece of paper fluttered out. It was a letter, yellowed with age, and the looped handwriting was unfamiliar.

“Dear Emily,” it began, the words like a foreign language. Her breath hitched. She had no idea who Emily was, but the letter felt like a lifeline, a distraction from the constant torrent of things she had to do.
