The flickering neon sign of the all-night diner cast a sickly yellow glow on Maya's face. Her hands, clammy and trembling, clutched the worn leather wallet. Inside, a wad of crisp hundred-dollar bills stared back at her. Her breath hitched. She'd just lost her job, her rent was overdue, and the grocery bill was a mountain she couldn't climb. Now this.

She pictured her landlord’s stony face, heard the rhythmic thumping of her own desperate heart. It pounded a frantic tattoo against her ribs.

The waitress, a woman with tired eyes and a perpetually kind smile, asked if she wanted another coffee. Maya just shook her head, the words catching in her throat. She needed to make a decision, a choice that wouldn’t unravel the last threads of her sanity. The wallet felt heavy, a burden she wasn’t sure she could bear.
