"Twenty years," Emily whispered, the words barely audible. The invitation felt heavy in her hand, like a weight she could barely lift. She sat down, her legs suddenly weak. She felt a tingling sensation in her limbs, a prickling of unease that ran up her spine.

She looked around her house, at the comfortable furniture, the photographs on the wall, the evidence of her successful life. Yet, none of it seemed to matter. Her past, and the people in it, loomed before her, casting a long, dark shadow. She closed her eyes, wishing she could rewind time, to be anywhere but here, now.
