The afternoon sun cast long shadows across the living room. A large box was by the front door, addressed to "Ms. Vivian Sterling." The name meant nothing to him. Mark stared at it, his jaw clenched, and his eyes darting around. It was just one more thing.

The silence of the empty apartment felt heavier than usual. Every surface seemed to be accumulating an invisible weight. He had so much he needed to do. So many people to call.

He let out a short, frustrated sigh and went to his desk, staring out the window, unable to even think about opening it.
