"We regret…" The standard phrase, a death knell for years of tireless work. John crumpled the email, the screen blurring before his eyes. His breath came in shallow, uneven gasps. The walls of his study, once a source of comfort, now seemed to lean inward.

He sat heavily in his chair, the weight of the rejection pressing down on him. The silence of the room was oppressive, broken only by the frantic ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner. He felt an intense need to disappear, to vanish entirely.

He stared at his hands, seeing them not as instruments of creation, but as clumsy, inadequate tools. He wanted to scream, to lash out, but the words caught in his throat, forming a lump that refused to budge.
