The email landed with a thud, the words a jumble that wouldn't coalesce. The message from the publisher was a formal rejection, citing "lack of potential." Michael felt as though he'd been punched. He sat rooted to his chair, his gaze fixed on the screen, his fingers twitching.

His apartment, usually a refuge, now felt like a prison. The carefully organized bookshelves, the framed accolades, the evidence of past successes – all mocked him. He struggled to swallow, his throat constricted, as though something was lodged in it.

He got up abruptly, feeling a compulsion to flee. He grabbed his keys and coat, the apartment a suffocating space he had to escape. The outside world was noisy and bright, but even that felt better than the crushing silence within.
