David stared at the vending machine, willing a bag of chips to appear. He hadn't slept well, plagued by a dream of paperwork swallowing him whole. The announcement hung in the air, a silent bomb. He’d dedicated ten years to this company, to this specific team.

He ran a hand through his hair, tugging at the strands as if to physically pull himself together. The elevator music felt mocking, a gentle soundtrack to impending doom. He fumbled for his phone, the screen reflecting his weary face.
