The harsh fluorescent lights of the kitchen seemed to pulse, amplifying the pounding in Daniel's head. He gripped the eviction notice until his knuckles were white, the paper crinkling under the pressure. The air felt thick, difficult to breathe. He felt a constriction in his chest.

He shoved the paper into the overflowing trash can, the crumpled form a futile attempt at denial. The apartment, usually a haven, now felt like a cage, the walls closing in. He wandered aimlessly through the rooms, the silence amplifying the frantic drumming of his heart.

He grabbed his coat and keys, the simple act of leaving the apartment a sudden, desperate necessity. He needed air, space, anything to escape the tightening grip.
