He stared at the small, cream-colored stationery in his hands. Daniel hadn't expected it to actually *arrive*. He’d written the apology months ago, after a sleepless night of guilt and shame. He’d sent it to his former friend, Emily, hoping for closure, or perhaps, absolution. Now, holding the unopened envelope, he felt a strange sense of… something.

His apartment was usually a haven, filled with the comforting presence of his well-loved books. But today, the silence was oppressive. He couldn't seem to focus on the words on the page; they blurred. His hands fidgeted, picking at the edge of the envelope. He felt a throbbing pulse in his temples, and the air seemed too thick, too heavy, as if the room itself was closing in on him.

He crumpled the letter, then forced himself to smooth it out again, wanting to read it, but also dreading it. He ran a hand through his hair, a gesture he’d repeated countless times that day. He felt like he was back in that school hallway, facing her icy gaze again. The past felt so very present.
