Gemotions

The fluorescent lights of the office seemed to hum with a particularly grating buzz tonight. Sarah ran a hand through her already messy hair, leaving it even more disheveled. She’d been staring at her screen for hours, the lines of code blurring into an indecipherable mess. A low, throbbing ache had settled behind her eyes, and her shoulders felt like they were permanently glued to her ears. The deadline loomed, a monstrous shadow cast across the already precarious state of her project.

She finally decided to visit the water cooler. As she was filling her cup, she heard a familiar voice. “Hey, Sarah! Still plugging away at the, uh… the thing?” It was Mark, from the adjacent team. She swallowed, her throat suddenly dry.

“Yeah,” she croaked, the word barely escaping her lips. "You too?" He gave her a strange look, then chuckled. “Well, let's just say I've made some… interesting progress on my own version. Come on, let me show you something.” His invitation hung in the air, a threat and a promise.
