“This can’t be happening,” John stammered, his voice hoarse. He was staring at the crumpled paper in his hand, unable to comprehend the words. His legs felt shaky, his balance precarious. He leaned against the brick wall of the campus building, seeking support.

He felt a deep sense of betrayal. The institution he had trusted, the place he had chosen to build his future, was abandoning him. The world seemed to tilt. He found himself unable to process thoughts, as if the connection between his mind and the reality of the situation had been severed. He just wanted to scream.
