Sweat beaded on Sarah's forehead as she wrestled the grocery bags from the car. The midday sun beat down, turning the asphalt into a shimmering heat trap. Just as she managed to haul the last bag toward the front door, Mr. Henderson from next door emerged, a polite smile plastered on his face. “Sarah, dear, could I have a quick word?” Her shoulders slumped, the weight of the bags suddenly seeming to double.

“Sure, Mr. Henderson,” she replied, her voice strained. She shifted the bags, the handles digging into her palms.

He gestured towards the towering oak on the property line. “That tree. A bit of a nuisance, you know. Dropping leaves, blocking the sun. I was thinking of having it taken down. Would that be alright with you?” Sarah’s breath hitched. Another thing to deal with. More to consider.

Her gaze flickered between the oak and Mr. Henderson. The oak seemed to loom, a silent judgment. “I…I need to think about it,” she finally managed, the words catching in her throat. The grocery bags felt like anchors now.
