He stared at the roses, deep crimson, their velvety petals perfect. The sudden floral delivery, arriving at his doorstep, made his chest tighten. No name. No indication. Just a riot of colour in a stark, minimalist apartment. He hadn’t felt this... constricted in months.

He knew he should be grateful; someone, somewhere, thought of him. But the gesture only amplified the silence echoing through the rooms. He picked up the vase and walked to the balcony, the city lights blurring in the distance.

His jaw clenched. He felt the familiar pressure behind his eyes, the tightening of his throat. He longed to scream but didn't know why. The city hummed with activity, and his apartment seemed a vacuum. Setting the flowers down, he rubbed his temples, a headache blossoming behind his eyes.
