Daniel, slumped in a worn armchair in his campus coffee shop, choked on a sip of lukewarm latte. His college essay, "The Bridge Between Two Worlds," was there, in black and white, on a digital display outside the student center. He could see it from here.

He could feel his pulse in his temples. Every muscle in his body felt tense. He pulled at the collar of his shirt, as if it were suddenly too tight. He felt like he wanted to scream.

He quickly stood up, his chair scraping against the floor. He needed to leave. He paid the cashier and bolted out the door, the cool air doing little to soothe the internal fire. He just wanted to disappear.
