The words hit Maya like a physical blow, leaving her breathless. Her daughter, Sofia, had revealed her decision to embrace Judaism, a religion that felt foreign and distant to Maya. The air in the dining room felt heavy, the smell of roasted chicken suddenly cloying. Maya’s hands flew up to her chest, as if she could physically hold the feeling at bay.

She abruptly rose from her chair, pushing it back with a loud screech. The sudden movement startled Sofia, who flinched. Maya couldn't meet her daughter's eyes; instead, she focused on the silverware, meticulously arranging each piece in its place.
