The air crackled with a strange energy. Her son, Ethan, had announced he was becoming a Rastafarian, his eyes shining with a newfound zeal. She felt a cold sweat break out on her forehead. She instinctively clutched at the strands of her pearl necklace. Her fingers felt clumsy and awkward.

She wanted to run, to scream, to make the whole thing disappear. The familiar walls of her living room suddenly felt constricting, as if they were closing in on her. She felt like she couldn’t breathe.

“Ethan…are you sure?” she finally croaked, her voice trembling. She knew her question was inadequate, but she didn’t know what else to say.
