“From now on, you’ll be a right-handed hitter, Maria.” The words hung in the air, a sentence of profound change. Maria, a dominant left-handed batter, felt a wave of nausea wash over her. She’d spent years honing her swing, perfecting her technique. Now, it was all being dismantled.

She felt a tremor run through her. She suddenly felt claustrophobic, trapped by the confines of the batting cage. She found herself fidgeting with the laces of her cleats. She wanted to scream.

Her mind was a blank. She felt as though she’d forgotten how to breathe.
