“Delayed due to unforeseen circumstances.” The automated voice, emotionless, seemed to pour salt into the wound. Clara felt her vision narrow. Her mother’s birthday. She had spent weeks planning a surprise party, now, it seemed, she wouldn't even be there.

She sank into a chair, the plastic cold against her skin. Her hands were clammy, her breath shallow. She stared at the floor, the tiles blurring into a dizzying pattern. She imagined her mother’s disappointment, the carefully chosen decorations, the forgotten cake.

She fished her phone out of her bag, the screen reflecting her pale, drawn face. She felt an overwhelming urge to cry, but she couldn't let herself. She had to think. She had to find a way.
