The world seemed to shrink. The vibrant colors of the decorations, the chatter of the guests, all faded into a dull background hum. She felt a strange buzzing in her ears. He was standing near the dance floor, laughing with a woman she didn’t recognize. Her gaze flickered away and then darted back, a desperate, morbid curiosity that she couldn't control.

She fumbled with her phone, pretending to check a message, the screen reflecting her own pale face. She felt a burning sensation in her cheeks, a searing blush that spread rapidly. She needed to look away, to break the gaze, but her feet felt rooted to the spot.
