The car keys felt like lead in her trembling hand. Jessica replayed the conversation in her head, the fragmented pieces, the hushed tones of her partner, Mark. The way he’d immediately hung up when he saw her. He'd been in the home office, supposedly working.

She gripped the steering wheel, knuckles white. She should go back inside, demand answers. But what if she didn’t like them? The thought of confrontation made her nauseous.

Her foot pressed the gas a little harder than necessary. She drove aimlessly, the city lights blurring into streaks of color. Maybe she'd just drive around until he had gone to bed.
