“Hello?” her voice cracked, the word catching in her throat. The phone lay on the counter, the call log displaying a number she didn't recognize. Her fingers traced the screen, her heart hammering against her ribs. She'd been in the next room, and had thought that she heard her partner, Daniel, on the phone.

The unfamiliar area code made her stomach clench. He had always been so open, so communicative. Where was he at now? Was he lying to her?

She paced the kitchen, unable to stand still. She felt a need to do something, anything, but didn't know what. She grabbed the phone, considered calling the number, then slammed it back down.
