The temperature in the room seemed to plummet, making her shiver despite the warm afternoon sunlight. Across the table, David was laughing, remembering their disastrous sailing trip. The boat capsizing, the freezing water, and the near-drowning experience. The details he was using were not hers.

Sarah’s breath hitched. She saw the sun, the gentle rocking of the boat, and the laughter that filled the air. She remembered it differently, a fun day. Her heart raced, thudding hard against her ribs. She felt the weight of confusion and disbelief pressing down on her.

She wanted to run, to escape this horrible conversation that was causing her to doubt her own mind. She stared at the table, refusing to make eye contact, afraid of what she might see reflected in David’s eyes. She stood up quickly and fled from the table, leaving her half-eaten lunch behind.
