The silence of the elevator was oppressive. Michael stood frozen, replaying the conversation in his head. His boss, in a fleeting, panicked moment, had revealed that the company was paying the new marketing director, Chloe, more than Michael, even though he'd been with the firm for a decade. The elevator doors opened. He bolted out, his legs carrying him away from the office floor.

He needed to walk. The city sounds, the traffic, the horns, were a welcome distraction. He took a deep breath, trying to calm the rapid thumping in his chest. His hands clenched into fists at his sides. He thought of his parents, who had always told him to be patient, to work hard.

He stopped, leaning against a brick wall. This wasn't fair. He had put in the time, he had delivered results. He couldn't help the feeling of being cheated, betrayed by the company he'd given so much to. His throat felt tight, and a burning sensation started in his stomach.
