The numbers on the screen danced before Daniel's eyes. It was a shared Google Doc, accidentally granting him access to everyone’s salaries. And there it was: Jessica, the recent graduate they had just hired, was making significantly more than he was, even though he was a senior member of the team. He felt a sudden, searing heat crawl up his neck and across his face.

He clicked the document shut, his hand trembling slightly. He leaned back in his chair, trying to compose himself. His breath came in ragged gasps. He rubbed his temples, trying to ward off a headache that was rapidly intensifying.

He glanced around the office, at the bustling activity, the cheerful chatter. Everyone seemed so relaxed, oblivious to the information he now possessed. He felt isolated, alone. He felt a mounting wave of anger. He needed to get out, he needed to think.
