The musty smell of the secondhand bookstore clung to Amelia as she fumbled with the brittle pages. Her breath hitched. The book, a worn copy of *Wuthering Heights*, had promised a quiet afternoon escape, but now, a folded piece of paper, nestled between pages, had her fingertips tingling. Her stomach lurched. She hadn’t expected this.

Her eyes darted around the quiet space, searching for someone watching, judging. The librarian, a woman with spectacles perched on her nose, seemed engrossed in a catalogue. Amelia’s pulse hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs. She unfolded the letter, her hands shaking slightly, and scanned the delicate script.

The words blurred. She clutched the letter tighter, crumpling the edges. What was this? Who had written this? And, the most pressing question, what should she do? She felt a cold sweat prickle on her forehead. She had to get out of here.
