He stared at the words, the ink blurring before his eyes. The letter, found in a well-worn copy of *Moby Dick*, revealed a truth he wasn't prepared to confront. His world, once predictable and secure, was now a fractured landscape.

He gripped the edge of the table, his knuckles white. The air felt thin, difficult to draw in. He could hear a ringing in his ears. He needed to get away, to understand.

He rose from the chair, his legs shaky. He had to find out more. The urgency that burned within him was an inferno. He had to find out who had written it, and what they had known. His fingers instinctively went to his phone, ready to find answers.
