The sign, 'Mrs. Gable's Famous Fudge,' stood mocking under the midday sun. Delia stared at it, her jaw clenched so tight she could feel the muscles in her face ache. The recipe had been a secret, passed down through generations. Now, it was being sold on a street corner, by a woman with a suspiciously familiar smile.

Her chest felt constricted, as if a heavy weight was resting upon it. The air felt thin, difficult to breathe. Her hands were shaking so violently that she had to grip them together, interlocking her fingers to stop them.

She saw the familiar swirls of chocolate being cut, the gleam of the candied pecans. The memory of her grandmother's words, the sacredness of the recipe…it all swirled together in a chaotic mess of emotion. She was left trembling, speechless.
