He felt a hot flush creep up his neck. His hands were clammy. He tried to act normal, to casually walk over to his desk. But his legs felt like lead weights.

The journal was closed now, but he knew. The knowledge was a heavy weight. His roommate, Kevin, was sitting on his bed, flipping through a magazine.

“Hey,” Kevin said, looking up. “You seem… pale.”

He forced a smile, a shaky imitation. “Just tired.” His voice sounded weak, an admission of defeat. He couldn’t look Kevin in the eye.
