The email lay open on the laptop screen, the subject line a stark declaration: “DNA Results - Your Ancestry Composition.” Sarah’s breath hitched. She scrolled down, her thumb hovering over the mouse. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic bird trying to escape. Her carefully curated life, a tapestry woven with familial threads, threatened to unravel.

She slammed the laptop shut, the metallic click echoing in the suddenly too-quiet room. The framed photo of her parents on the mantelpiece seemed to stare back at her with an unsettling intensity. She stumbled to the kitchen, seeking the comfort of a cup of tea. Her hands shook so badly she nearly dropped the mug. The warm liquid did little to soothe the cold dread that was creeping through her veins.

“Mom?” she whispered into her phone, her voice barely audible. The phone felt like a hot coal in her palm. The simple word hung in the air, a plea, a demand, a question. The knot in her stomach tightened with each passing ring.
