"They're starting now," the real estate agent had told her on the phone, his voice detached. He didn't understand. She clutched the phone tighter, her knuckles straining. The words had hung in the air, a threat.

She felt a sudden urge to flee, to drive away, to put as much distance as possible between herself and the site. She wanted to yell, to shout, to rail against the injustice of it all.

She watched the wrecking ball swing, each arc a brutal punctuation mark. She buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking, as the walls began to crumble.
