The weight of the football pads felt heavier than usual. James adjusted the chin strap of his helmet, again and again, even though it was perfectly secure. The knot in his stomach was so tight he could barely swallow. Coach Thompson had requested a meeting after practice. He'd seen that look before, the one that meant bad news. He imagined himself playing for other teams and the idea made him feel more sick. His breath came in shallow, rapid gasps, and he could taste the metallic tang of fear. The other players were already heading to the showers, laughing, oblivious.
