The lawyer’s office seemed to shrink with each passing second, the polished wood of the conference table closing in. Sarah clutched the letter, her knuckles bone-white. The lawyer had a calm demeanor that she envied. It was a letter addressed to her ex-husband, a carefully constructed explanation for why she left, a justification for her choices.

Her gaze darted around the room, as if searching for an escape. Each tick of the grandfather clock in the corner echoed the relentless pounding in her chest. She replayed the scene that was surely about to unfold. She had thought she was at peace with that chapter of her life.

The letter contained confessions. Truths she had long buried. Revealing it would undo years of healing, years of rebuilding. She felt as though the floor beneath her was shifting.
