Michael stared at the document on his screen, his vision blurring. The words swam before his eyes. "Merger Agreement - Immediate Impact." He felt a strange flutter in his chest, a rapid, erratic rhythm. His hands began to shake uncontrollably.

He leaned back in his chair, trying to steady himself, but his limbs felt heavy, unresponsive. The fluorescent lights overhead seemed to hum with a discordant energy. He could feel sweat prickling his skin.

“No, no, no,” he muttered under his breath, the sound barely audible. He ran a hand through his already disheveled hair, his thoughts a chaotic jumble. He had a mortgage. A family. He had to keep this job.

He slammed his laptop shut, the abrupt action startling the woman at the desk beside him. He needed to talk to someone, anyone. He quickly got up and started towards the door.
